Moving house is a stressful time for everyone, though we often forget that cats are especially susceptible to the stress of moving home, cats are often find moving home confusing and traumatic, due to the new surroundings.

However you can help your cat at this stressful time:

  • When you start packing your home completely empty one room, and put in this room the cats belongings bed litter tray and the carrier that you will be using to transport on moving day, leave the door open on the carrier and let your cat explore it, this will relieve the stress on your cat if he or she is not use to being transported.
  • Keep the cat in this room for a few weeks so that you cat gets use to the idea of an empty room, its also usful as your cat will be safe and away from the hussle and bussle of packing and the packaging materials.

Moving Day:

  • Moving Day make your cat the 1st priorty, find an empty room that you do not need to use that day and put all your cat belongings in it, keeping the window closed and the door locked or shut open the carrier and leave your cat to explore this new room. Dont open this door until all of the furniture is in the house, as you cat is likely to bolt for the nearest exit!
  • It is not avisable to let you cat outside too soon, make sure its used to the house first, otherwise it may run away. You can buy a cat lead and collar to take it into the garden so it can get used to the immediate surroundings. Once you are happy then allow your cat to explore alone.
