Safety when Viewing Properties

Personal Safety, This is a guide for your information, we can not take any responsibility for your safety or your personal possessions and offer all readers the following advice.

Blind and Deaf Tenants

We recommend that you have at least 2 persons with you at all times when viewing or showing someone around your home. This is a guideline for your own safety; please take note of the advice Council-exchange.org offers before arranging any viewings in your own home or another tenant’s property.

If you are viewing a property

  1. Always plan your journey in advance and check public transport times if you are not using your own vehicle. If practical, order a taxi to come to the property you are viewing at a set time, or arrange for someone to collect you at a pre-arranged time.
  2.  View the property during the day or if it has to be evening making sure you are not alone.
  3. Make sure if you are disabled that you have access to the property, if it currently has steps ask if they can put in a temporary ramp this could be make from wooden planks.
  4. Take a family member or friend along with you.
  5. If no one is available to come with you leave a message with someone about where you are going, the address and the name of the person you are meeting.
  6. If it’s possible also give the time of the viewing and roughly how long it may take.
  7. Ask the person, about other persons who will be present, even about pets they might have, if you have a problem with dogs ask them to arrange for someone else to look after them.
  8. Never accept lifts from the other party.
  9. If you have a person alarm carry it, especially when going to an area you do not know.
  10. Take a mobile telephone and make sure a friend or family member has the number.
  11. When you arrive ring a friend tell them you have arrived at the viewing ask them to ring you back at a set time
  12. If at any time you feel uneasy leave the house, always trust your instincts. If it makes you feel better give an excuse such as the rooms are too small, sorry the area is not what I am looking for.

If you are showing your property to someone

  1. Never give out unnecessary personal details, such as schools, birthdays, children’s or family names.
  2. Always have someone with you when showing another family around your home.
  3. Find out in advance how many persons will be coming to the viewing.
  4. Tell friends or neighbours that someone is coming to view your home. Give the name, address and telephone number of the person viewing, and time of viewing.
  5. Let the viewer know that your friend or neighbour will be dropping by in 20-30 minutes, and arrange with someone to do so. Let the friend or neighbour know that if you phone during the viewing, they should come immediately.
  6. If you feel uneasy at any time phone the friend or neighbour you have arranged to pop in so that they come immediately.
  7. Never leave anyone alone in your property, never allow any person to wander your home freely always make sure someone is with them.
  8. If you have children, do not ever leave your children alone with anyone other than someone you and your children know.
  9. Never ask your children to show someone around your home. If you are unable to do this yourself due to illness or a disability don’t arrange a viewing until it is possible for at least one other adult to be present.
